Jewelry and small object cutouts

Tiny reflective products fail cutouts for boring reasons: the model sees sparkle as background, thin chains break into dashes, and at thumbnail size every halo looks huge. This page is about capture and check habits for that class of SKU — not a general catalog checklist (Ecommerce catalog cutouts checklist).

Why jewelry is hard

Capture habits that help

  1. Use a simple, contrasting backdrop while shooting — busy linen fights every mask.
  2. Avoid extreme backlight that turns metal into a white smear.
  3. Shoot sharp. Soft focus removes the only edge the model had.
  4. Remove props you will not sell (tags, extra stands) before cutout when you can.

Lighting notes that also help packshots: Packshot lighting for easier cutouts.

In the editor

  1. Run the automatic cutout in Easy Background Remover.
  2. Zoom to 100% on chains and prongs (Zoom and check edges).
  3. Use Add for missing metal segments; Erase for backdrop caught in loops of a pendant.
  4. Prefer hard edges on polished metal unless you intentionally keep a soft reflection falloff.
  5. Preview on both white and dark plates — jewelry listings use both.

Listing reality

Many marketplaces want a clean white plate, not transparency. Finish the cutout, then apply a flat white (or required gray) before export (When flat color export beats alpha). Keep a transparent master if your brand site needs it.

What this will not fix

Crooked stones, dusty glass, and dishonest color grades. Cutout removes backdrop busywork; styling and honesty still sell the piece.
