Local cutout vs manual masking

Two honest ways to isolate a subject: draw the mask yourself in a full editor, or let an on-device model propose one and fix the misses. Easy Background Remover is the second path, inside Chrome.

Manual masking

Strengths: pixel-level control, familiar for designers, great when the edge is art-directed (motion trails, deliberate fringe).

Costs: time. A clean product on white can still eat ten minutes if you are tracing cable highlights by hand. Fatigue shows up as wobbly edges across a fifty-SKU set.

Automatic local cutout (this extension)

Strengths: fast first pass, stays on your machine, brushes for the last fixes, PNG out the door. Good default for catalogs, avatars, and “I need this for a slide in five minutes.”

Limits: the model can misread fine hair, smoke, transparent plastics, or subjects that match the wall. You either refine or reshoot — same as any automatic tool.

A simple rule of thumb

Situation Lean toward
Many similar products, clean backdrop Local automatic + light refine
One hero image, unusual materials Manual or heavy refine
Privacy-sensitive originals Local tools (avoid casual uploads)
Need illustration-quality fringe Manual

Easy Background Remover does not try to replace a full design suite. It removes the blank-backdrop chore so you spend attention on the edge cases that deserve it.
