Permissions explained for image extensions
An image extension needs enough browser access to receive the image you choose, open its editor, remember useful local state, and return a result. That access is not the same thing as uploading every photo. For Easy Background Remover, the important operational question is narrower: which visible action needs each capability, and what happens to the pixels after you start it?
This page applies that question to the product workflow. For a category-level way to evaluate unfamiliar tools, see Chrome extension permissions for image tools.
Start with the action, not the warning text
Browser permission dialogs describe technical boundaries. They do not explain the full data path, and their wording can sound broader than the action you had in mind. Work backward from what you can actually do:
- The toolbar action needs to open extension UI.
- A right-click image action needs to know which page image you selected.
- The editor needs to read a file that you deliberately drop, paste, or choose.
- Copy needs permission to place the finished result on the clipboard.
- Recent-job convenience needs browser storage.
None of those statements, by itself, proves that a photo goes to a remote cutout service. Permissions say what the browser allows. Architecture and runtime behavior determine how that allowance is used.
Page access and the right-click workflow
Easy Background Remover can offer a page-image workflow in addition to opening a local file. Page integration may require broad-looking site access because images can appear on many different websites. The useful boundary is user intent: you choose the image or invoke the image action.
There is also a practical limit. A website can serve an image in a way that prevents another page context from reading it. If a right-click attempt cannot load the image, save it locally and open the saved file in the editor. Broader permission text does not override a site’s delivery rules.
If you never use page-image actions, you can use the file-picker or drop workflow instead. The permission declaration may still be part of the installed build because the feature exists for other users.
Local storage is for local continuity
The extension can keep a short history of recent originals and results in browser storage, including IndexedDB. That makes it possible to reopen a recent job without creating an online account or remote project.
Treat that history as a convenience cache, not an archive. It belongs to the browser profile on that device. Someone with access to the same unlocked profile may be able to reopen recent work. You can clear extension data when using a shared machine, and uninstalling should not be your only cleanup plan when the material is sensitive.
Storage permission therefore answers “may this extension retain local state?” It does not answer “is this state synchronized to an account?” Easy Background Remover does not require an account for the basic open, cut out, refine, and export path.
Clipboard access is tied to Copy
When you choose Copy, the extension needs to write the result to the system clipboard. That is different from downloading a PNG to a folder. Browsers and operating systems may still block or prompt for clipboard use depending on context.
If Copy fails, use Download PNG. A clipboard permission is not evidence that the extension continuously reads everything you copy; the product workflow needs to write the cutout after your explicit action.
Network activity is not automatically a photo upload
The first launch may download an on-device model. The model is then cached so cutout processing can run in the browser. An extension update can cause another model download. Extension assets and updates also use ordinary network delivery.
That is why “never uses the network” would be inaccurate. The more precise claim is that the everyday pixel-processing path is designed to stay local: open an image, create the mask, refine it, and export the result in the browser.
